Passengers on the Toronto Transit Commission will only be allowed to buy 10 tokens at a time from collector booths.
Token purchases at vending machines, located at unmanned subway entrances, will be cut to a maximum of one at a time.
The transit authority says the new rules, which come into effect immediately, will ensure that there are enough tokens in the system for everyone.
The new restrictions come as the city considers a proposed fare hike, which could come into effect in the New Year.
If implemented, the adult fare on all routes would increase by 25 cents.
