Durham Regional Police have become the latest force to use the popular video file-sharing site, YouTube.com, in their investigation into a murder at an Ajax, Ont. nightclub last fall.
The police force has posted a nearly four-minute long video clip that contains 41 still images captured on various cameras inside the RimRock Bar in the early hours of Sept. 1, 2006.
Police hope to identify witnesses who were at the nightclub on Harwood Avenue when a confrontation erupted inside.
Orin Felix, 19 and a Durham resident, 20, were stabbed when the altercation carried on outside. Felix succumbed to his injuries in hospital but the other victim, whose name hasn't been released, is expected to make a full recovery.
Police are appealing to anyone who appears in the video, or who can identify any witnesses, to contact authorities.
The video can be found using the search words "Durham Regional Police." As of Tuesday morning, the video had been viewed more than 600 times.
Hamilton police credit their use of YouTube last year with helping them find a suspect in a stabbing death.
In December of last year, they posted surveillance video of two men attending a hip-hop concert in the city. The short video was viewed online more than 30,000 times.
Within about two weeks of the video appearing on YouTube, a 24-year-old suspect turned himself in to police.
Toronto police officers also turned to the site last week in a bid to find a missing teenage girl, Eva Ho, who has been missing since August.
Anyone with information into the murder at RimRock Bar is asked to contact Durham region police at youtube@drps.ca or 905-579-1520, ext. 5400, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
