An SUV driver died Saturday night after a bus broadsided him when he tried to make a sudden left-hand turn into a Tim Hortons coffee shop.

"He literally made a turn in front of the bus. That's all it was," Sgt. Tim Burrows of Toronto Police's traffic services division told ctvtoronto.ca on Sunday.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m.

Burrows said there was no evidence at the scene that would initially have police think alcohol was a factor, but added a toxicology screen will be carried out when the post-mortem examination is conducted.

The accident occurred as the bus headed east on Sheppard Avenue East near Morningside Avenue. The SUV had been headed west.

The SUV's driver was alone in the vehicle, Burrows said.

"The SUV literally did a left-hand turn right in front of the bus and left the driver of the bus no opportunity or time to be able to avoid it," he said.

The dead SUV driver hasn't been identified yet, Burrows said.
