Seventeen people were taken to hospital after a streetcar collided with a Greyhound bus in downtown Toronto, Thursday afternoon.
The streetcar came off of the tracks in the collision, which occurred in the intersection of Dundas and River Streets shortly after 3 p.m.
"The bus had gone through the intersection and the streetcar made an attempt to stop to avoid colliding with the bus," Sgt. Christopher Tracey told reporters. "He did what he could; unfortunately the streetcar ended up colliding with the rear of the coach bus."
Seventeen people, including four children, were taken to hospital, although Tracey stressed that no one suffered life-threatening injuries.
Tracey said the most serious injuries were suffered by the two drivers. The TTC driver suffered injuries to his hip, while other driver suffered a shoulder injury.
About 30 people were on the streetcar, including children from Cosburn Middle School. The bus was empty except for the driver.
It is unclear whether one of the vehicles ran a red light.
Dundas streetcars are being diverted along Queen Street between Victoria Street and Broadview Avenue until the scene is cleared.
The area is blocked off and police are suggesting drivers avoid the scene during the afternoon rush hour.
"There are a number of statements that need be taken, and obviously this has to be done thoroughly. It is not an urgency to get the vehicles moved, so they can sit while the investigation takes place," Tracey said.
