Peel Police have named the 28-year-old man facing murder charges in connection with the death of a Brampton woman over the weekend.

Christopher Hurd of Brampton is charged with first-degree murder after Loretta Lavalley, 36, died from injuries she suffered from a sexual assault.

Hurd was remanded into custody after a short court appearancein Brampton  on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim died at Sunnybrook Hospital a short time after placing a 911 call. Police responded to the distress call at apartment No. 103 at Kennedy Road and Church Street East just after midnight on Sunday.

Police arrested a suspect at the scene and charged him with breaking and entering, forcible confinement, aggravated sexual assault and attempted murder. The charges were upgraded to first-degree murder after Lavalley died.

On Monday, forensic investigators were seen brushing a window at the Brampton apartment for evidence.

Police have not commented on whether the victim knew her attacker or indicate if there were any witnesses to the crime.

Lavalley had been living in the Brampton apartment for three years and neighbours described her as "quiet and friendly."

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. The death is Peel Region's 26th homicide of 2008.
