One of two people facing dangerous driving charges after trucker David Virgoe died in a Highway 400 accident was denied bail Saturday.
19-year-old Nauman Nusrat, who has been charged with a string of offences including criminal negligence causing death, will remain in custody until his next court date in July, the Toronto Star reported.
Prabhjit Multani, 20, also charged with the same offences, was released from a Barrie courthouse into the custody of his parents. He is under strict bail conditions.
Nusrat's mother wept when Justice of the Peace Linda Kay delivered her ruling following a week of hearings. A publication ban has been placed on the testimony, according to the Star.
Virgoe died on July 18 when his tractor-trailer went into a ditch after allegedly being cut off by a speeding vehicle.
Police said two or three cars were speeding in the northbound lanes, making sudden lane changes and following too closely, when they approached Virgoe's vehicle.
The father of three and grandfather of five was hailed as a hero for swerving the tractor-trailer into the ditch to avoid an oncoming minivan packed with people.
The Ontario Trucking Association honoured the veteran driver's memory by establishing a $40,000 scholarship for children of Ontario truck drivers who are killed or seriously injured on the job.
