Police have charged a 40-year-old Toronto neurosurgeon with first-degree murder after a body was discovered near a roadway in Kleinburg on Thursday afternoon.
The body, belonging to an adult woman, was discovered by a passerby in a wooded area near a ravine off Highway 27 and Nashville Road at around 3:30 p.m.
Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan told CP24 the victim was last heard from on Wednesday evening. She worked as a family physician but did not show up to work on Thursday.
The cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma. Ryan said investigators believe she was killed in her home sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
A suspect identified as Mohammed Shamji, 40, of Toronto was arrested and charged on Friday. Ryan said he was taken into custody at a coffee shop in the area of Lakeshore Road East and Highway 10 in Mississauga.
“He didn’t disappear after the murder,” Ryan said.
Mohammed is also a doctor, a neurosurgeon who works at Toronto Western Hospital.
Mohammed is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
