Toronto police are appealing for witnesses after three people were stabbed during what police are calling a “random attack” on Sunday morning.

A fourth person was attacked, but did not require hospitalization.

Paramedics said they transported a male in his 20s, a female in her 20s and a male in his 40s to St. Michael's Hospital. The older male was stabbed in the back while the younger two were wounded in their torsos, they said.

Det. Phil Hibbeln, of Toronto police, said a man was arrested near the intersection of College and Yonge Streets after he started attacking people with a knife at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Two of the stabbings occurred outside Maple Leaf Gardens, which is now home to Ryerson University athletic facilities and a Loblaw grocery store. The third stabbing took place further west, according to police.

The motive was not immediately clear.

"All we know is that, earlier this morning, some male went on a bit of rampage and started attacking people at random," Hibbeln said Sunday morning.

Hibbeln later said that police will likely be looking into the suspect’s mental health history.

Shawn O’Neill, 62, has been charged with four counts each of aggravated assault and attempted murder, and six counts each of weapons dangerous and assault with a weapon.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed a man walking in the Church Street and Carlton Street area with a knife to call them at 416-808-5100. Or they can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 or online at www.222tips.com.
