A 36-year-old man has died following an overnight shooting in downtown Toronto.

Police were called to the intersection of Dundas and Sherbourne Streets shortly after midnight, when dispatchers received several calls from residents reporting the sound of gunshots.

When they arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound who was unconscious and not breathing. The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified by police as Shaka Reid of Toronto.

Witnesses told police and reporters they'd seen a group of young men disappear into an alley before hearing what sounded like a gunshot. One man told reporters on scene he walked into the alley to investigate, and found the victim.

"I tried to keep him alive. He died right in my hands," the man said.

Police have yet to release any description of the suspect or suspects, and said they were canvassing local businesses to retrieve any surveillance footage that may have captured the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or 416-808-5100. Tips can also be left anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
