The City of Vaughan has demolished a home used as a marijuana grow-operation in a symbolic gesture to illustrate that the drug operations won't be tolerated.
"The key message here today that we really want to get out is that now we've been mediating grow-ops and former grow-ops," said Mayor Linda Jackson.
"You can't just put bleach in the home and repaint the homes and then allow new people to buy them."
The house at 1218 Centre St. is the second marijuana grow-op in Ontario to be demolished by the city. Niagara Falls tore down the first former grow-op home last fall.
The drug lab inside the Vaughan home, north of Toronto, left behind exposed wiring and a flooded basement.
Another concern was that a school is located just a few houses down.
Professionals who are exposed to the health hazards of cleaning up the grow operations welcomed the action taken by the city.
"The biggest dangers are the holes in the floors, the holes in the walls, the after-effects -- a tremendous mould problem and now we're hearing about mites," said Fire Chief Greg Senay.
Both homes that have been torn down were done so at the owners' expense.
