Two men have been charged after 123 kilograms of suspected cocaine was found concealed in a pickup truck at the Blue Water Bridge in southern Ontario.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency, the truck was referred for secondary inspection after it arrived at the Point Edward, Ont., crossing on May 6.
During the search, a detector dog indicated that narcotics may be on board. A subsequent investigation unveiled 105 packages of suspected cocaine concealed within the truck.
The vehicle’s two occupants were then handed over to the RCMP.
Two men -- both residents of Stoney Creek, Ont. -- are charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to import a controlled substance.
They are set to appear in a Sarnia courthouse on Friday for a bail hearing.
According to the CBSA, officers in the southern Ontario region have confiscated about 1000 kg of cocaine over the last five years. They made 896 drug seizures in 2013 alone.
“The illicit drug trade poses a serious threat to the safety and security of our communities,” said Insp. Todd Gilmore, acting District Commander of RCMP in southwestern Ontario.
“We will continue to diligently work with our partners to stop these drugs from entering our communities and bring those responsible before justice.”
