A suspect charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old Etobicoke student will stand trial Monday, three years to the date of the murder.

Nahoor Araya of Toronto faces second-degree murder charges after Boris Cikovic was shot in Buttonwood Park on Oct. 3, 2008.

Toronto police said Cikovic, who suffered "from signs of obvious trauma" after the incident, died of a gunshot would to the abdomen. Police said he was with a group of up to 15 other individuals at a tennis court around 10:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred.

Cikovic, who did not have a criminal history, had a stun gun with him, police said. Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan told CTV Toronto in 2008 that friends of the victim had told police the weapon had been for his own protection.

On Oct. 9, 2008, police arrested the then-18-year-old Araya.

Police are still searching for three other suspects in connection to the shooting.

Cikovic's mother, Vesna Cikovic, told CTV Toronto on Thursday, that she doesn't believe the trial will offer her any closure.

"All of the pieces of the puzzle, what really happened that night, we will get it. But I won't be able to know what he was thinking about, how much he was scared," Vesna said.

Since Cikovic's death, Vesna and her husband have spoken out against granting bail for suspects accused of murder.

Araya was granted bail six months after Cikovic's death. His trial is expected to last four to five weeks.

The investigation of the fatal shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS or the Toronto Police Homicide Squad at 416-808-7400.
