A massive crash involving three tractor-trailers near Ajax, Ont., left one person in critical condition and several Highway 401 lanes closed overnight.
The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401, west of Harwood Bridge, shortly before midnight on Tuesday.
Ontario Provincial Police said that a tractor-trailer failed to slow down as it entered into a construction zone and crashed into the back of another truck, causing it to hit the truck in front of it.
Police said the driver in the rear truck was trapped in his vehicle and suffered serious head trauma.
Emergency crews pried the driver from the truck cab and rushed him to a hospital in Ajax. He was then rushed via air ambulance to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
The driver in the middle truck was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Three eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 remained blocked through the night and reopened late Wednesday morning.
No charges have been laid in connection to the crash.
