Three TTC employees are facing criminal charges alleging they had been stealing fares at subway collector booths.

Const. Tony Vella of the Toronto Police Service told ctvtoronto.ca on Tuesday that the investigation commenced in mid-June following a complaint from a member of the public.

TTC special constables took the lead, assisted by officers from 53 Division.

The suspects worked at collection booths at Queen, Union and Yonge-Eglinton TTC stations.

"You would come in, you would ask for a token. He would indicate it's $2.75 and you would provide the person with $2.75. And then they would keep the token," Vella said to explain how the alleged theft might have happened.

"Officially, what they need to do is provide you with the token."

A passenger would then deposit the token into the fare collector and proceed.

When the next person came by, they would sell that person the token they kept and pocket the change, Vella alleged.

"This type of behaviour will not be tolerated," he said.

the following operators are facing charges:

  • Tolane Fountain, 57, of Toronto - five counts of fail to collect fare, theft under
  • Anthony Alfano, 65, of Whitby - nine counts of fail to collect fare, theft under

They are to appear in court on Aug. 31.

Kiran Sachdev, 56, of Toronto faces four counts of fail to collect fare and one of theft under. He has been scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 3.
