Two thieves managed to escape with bags full of money after a nighttime robbery of an armoured truck.
At about 9:20 p.m. Monday night two armed robbers dressed in black approached a Securicor armoured truck as it stopped near Queen Street and Roncesvalles in west-end Toronto.
Two guards were going to make a cash drop at a convenience store's automatic teller machine. But the robbers disarmed the guards and took the cash.
About $80,000 in cash disappeared into the night as the robbers fled the scene.
The guards ran into the convenience store and asked Sherman Yang to call police.
"They just called 911," Yang said, adding that he didn't hear anything as the robbery occurred just outside his store.
The suspects disappeared into a maze of back alleys. A heavily armed police emergency task force team responded to the scene but was unable to find the robbers. A police canine unit was also brought to the scene but the dog was not able to follow the trail.
Both guards involved in the incident were unharmed.
Police say they have few leads on the suspects. Investigators believe the robbers followed the truck's route to become familiar with how the guards make their deliveries.
The first suspect is described as being:
- A while male;
- Standing 6'2" tall;
- Weighing 220 lbs; and
- Wearing black tear-away pants, a black jacket with hood and a balaclava.
The second suspect is described as being dressed all in black with a black balaclava.
Police ask anyone with information about the robbery to call the Hold Up Squad at 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
