TORONTO - Housing activist Cathy Crowe has been named the New Democrat candidate to run in the Toronto Centre provincial byelection on Feb. 4.
Former deputy premier George Smitherman, a Liberal, held the riding for the past decade until he stepped down to take a run at the mayor's chair in Toronto.
Crowe was unopposed in her bid to become the NDP candidate and was officially selected Sunday.
Crowe, a nurse, has received awards for her work on the streets of Toronto, providing care to homeless people.
As co-founder and leader of the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, Crowe has fought for improved shelter facilities in Toronto.
Crowe says on Feb. 4 voters can demand action on housing and health care rather than "public asset sales and corporate tax giveaways."
