Toronto Transit Commission chair Karen Stintz said late Friday that she will call for the dissolution of the current commission, currently controlled by Mayor Rob Ford's allies, in a bid to inject "stability and renewal" into the beleaguered group.

Last month the TTC board voted 5-4 to relieve TTC general manager Gary Webster of his duties amid a political battle over the city's transit future.

Stintz said in a release that she will ask city council Monday to dissolve the nine-person commission, which includes Stintz, and replace it with a new group immediately.

Stintz is recommending that the new group consist of 11 members comprised of seven councillors and four citizens.

She suggested that the new commission not be predetermined in order to ensure that its composition will reflect the will of council.

"I believe in this because the recent weeks have clearly demonstrated an immediate need for stability," she said in the release.
