The family of Stefanie Rengel, the Toronto girl killed on New Year's Day, says they have received an overwhelming amount of support during their time of grief.
The parents and stepparents, who are members of the Toronto Police Service as officers and court officers, expressed their gratitude in a written statement on Friday.
"We would like to thank so many people that it would be impossible to do so individually. We appreciate the sincere concern and empathy that have been, and continue to be, expressed to us in so many ways. Stefanie would have been overwhelmed, as are we."
The family members thanked the police force for its "support and dedication," and acknowledged the media for respecting their privacy "during the most difficult and profoundly sad time in our lives."
"To the residents of Parkview Hills, surrounding neighbourhoods, and all the witnesses who've come forward, you have shown us what it means to be part of a real community and, for all your support, we truly thank you, along with other countless Canadians."
More than 400 family, friends, police officers and acquaintances attended Rengel's funeral last Sunday. Police Chief Bill Blair was among those who came to pay their respects.
The slain teenager was remembered as a friendly, outgoing person.
She died on Jan. 1 after being stabbed on the sidewalk just steps from her east-end home.
Rengel's friends allege the murder was the result of a love-triangle and teenage jealousy.
A 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy have been charged with first-degree murder. They cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The accused remain in custody and are set to appear in court via video link on Wednesday.
