The province's Special Investigations Unit is probing a wild chase and shootout between Hamilton police and two armed robbery suspects that left one suspect wounded.

The incident started Friday shortly after 9 p.m. at a Tim Horton's restaurant located at Stone Church Road and Upper James Street.

They wore ski masks, with one allegedly toting a shotgun. They demanded cash and fled across Hamilton Mountain.

According to an SIU news release, the suspects went to the Elcho Street and Wycliffe Avenue area.

"There was a confrontation with police in which shots were fired," it said.

Paramedics took one suspect to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene.

The SIU, which is charged with investigating cases of serious injury or death involving police, said it has eight investigators working on this incident.

Three of those are forensic identification specialists.

"The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529," it said.
