Peel police are under investigation by the province's Special Investigations Unit following a shooting incident in Malton.

Police got called to a domestic dispute Saturday evening. Four officers responded to the scene. They located a man at a convenience store and proceeded to talk with him.

The conversation escalated into an altercation inside the store. Gunshots were fired.

The man was struck in the chest and remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook hospital.

Because the matter is under investigation by the SIU, police are releasing few details on the incident. The SIU is interviewing six witnesses.

The SIU is an independent provincial agency that probes police involvement in cases where a civilian has been seriously injured.
