A spate of accidents during rush hour sent a number of people to hospital and forced the closure of some key roads in the Greater Toronto Area.
All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed Monday evening following a multi-vehicle crash in Mississauga.
Ontario Provincial Police said Highway 401 eastbound at Mississauga Road was closed due to the collision approaching Mavis Road around 5 p.m. All lanes were re-opened by 7:30 p.m.
Police said one female was transferred by air ambulance to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
Also in Mississauga a man was rushed to hospital with vital signs absent after his car went over the guardrail on Highway 407 at Brittania Road before landing in a ditch during the evening rush hour.
The major collision bureau is investigating.
Meanwhile, in Newmarket, Ont., Davis Drive between Bayview Parkway and Roxborough Road was closed for a few hours following a head-on crash.
Two people were taken to Southlake Hospital minutes away from the scene. Later one of the patients was transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences in Toronto in stable condition.
