Toronto police and fire officials are investigating two separate sets of fires that could be the work of an arsonist.

Fire crews were called to southwest Etobicoke early Tuesday morning after a blaze had been spotted in a shed behind the old Arnold's Drive-In restaurant at 42nd Street and Lake Shore Boulevard. It then spread to the building.

As firefighters were putting out the fire, a police officer spotted a second blaze behind the Royal Canadian Legion branch across the street. Garbage had been lit, but it was quickly extinguished.

Arnold's restaurant had been shut down for some time. Condominiums are set to go up in its spot.

In a separate investigation, officials say arson is suspected in a blaze that gutted an east-end home and killed two cats on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Mortimer Avenue near Logan Avenue around 1:30 p.m. They arrived to find the rear deck of the home ablaze and rapidly spreading.

"The fire consumed the rear half of the home and a portion of the attached home," says a statement released by Toronto Police.

Nobody was injured in the fire but two cats were found dead. The fire is said to have caused $100,000 in damage.

Police have no suspects but are looking into whether these two incidents are related to several other arson-related fires sparked throughout the city this summer.

Arson is suspected in recent fires set in Parkdale, Christie Pitts, and Cabbagetown.
