A 77-year-old woman is dead and her 87-year-old husband is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after they were struck by a TTC bus while crossing an east-end street.
The elderly couple was walking across Don Mills Road, north of Overlea Boulevard, at about 10 a.m. when they were hit, Toronto police said.
Both victims were taken to hospital. Rosalia Dornyei was pronounced dead, while her husband is fighting for his life.
The pair crossed at a point about 100 metres from the nearest traffic light, investigators said.
Police said the man had just undergone eye surgery, and the couple was on their way to the doctor's office for a checkup. The victims have not been identified.
The accident closed the southbound lanes of Don Mills.
The death marks the 18th pedestrian fatality in Toronto this year. The city recorded 26 in 2006.
The incident comes a week after police conducted a motorist/pedestrian safety blitz. The week-long campaign followed a horrible seven days on the city's roads where two pedestrians were killed and 10 others were injured.
Anyone with information on Friday morning's incident is asked to call Traffic Services at 416-808-1900.
