TORONTO -
Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin will continue in the post for up to an additional six months while an all-party search committee considers candidates who have applied for the next five-year term.
Marin's current term expires March 31 and a government spokeswoman says the committee will not make a selection by then.
The Ombudsman Act stipulates that in such circumstances, cabinet can appoint a temporary ombudsman to serve a term of up to six months and did so today.
The government decided not to renew the contracts of Marin, environmental commissioner Gord Miller and integrity commissioner Lynn Morrison. Instead, all three must compete for their jobs with any outside candidates, if they still want them.
Marin has said he planned to seek a second term.
