A 20-year-old man pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the first of several trials into the Boxing Day shooting spree that killed 15-year-old Jane Creba.
The man, who can not be identified because he was a minor at the time of the incident, is alleged to have been one of the gunmen who shot into a crowd of people shopping on Yonge Street on Boxing Day in 2005.
Creba, who happened to be shopping in the area with her mother and sister, was hit by a stray bullet and died at the scene. Several other people were wounded.
At the trial Monday, the man plead not guilty to second-degree murder, six counts of attempted murder and five gun charges.
The trial isn't expected to begin in earnest for another three weeks as lawyers for both sides still need to iron out legal issues. The trial is expected to last about three months.
The shooting broke out after two groups of young men got into a fight. Seven adults and one other youth face charges in connection to the shooting. Their trials are scheduled to begin next year.
