A new judge has been chosen to preside over the murder trial of Robert Baltovich, but it looks like it will still take several months before the matter will go before the courts.

Justice David McCombs has been assigned the case, after Justice David Watt had to step down after being promoted to the Ontario Court of Appeal.

It will take time for the new judge to be brought up to speed on the case, and lawyers are still arguing at least six pretrial motions.

Jury selection was supposed to begin yesterday but about 300 potential jurors were sent home after news Watt had to be replaced.

Baltovich was expected to return to court this week. He is charged with the second-degree murder of his girlfriend Elizabeth Bain, who has been missing since June, 1990.
