A 27-year-old Toronto man is now facing two counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of a woman and a teenager in an Etobicoke apartment building on Christmas Day.
Charges against Nana Yaw have been upgraded from second-degree murder.
Yaw was remanded in custody by telephone on Friday. His next court appearance is Jan. 11, which is scheduled to be a video remand.
Toronto police say a 16-year-old boy suffering from knife wounds walked into 23 Division on Wednesday night and told police he had been confined in an apartment for two days.
Officers arrived at the complex at 2737 Kipling Ave., near Steeles Avenue, a short time later and discovered two lifeless bodies.
One victim has been identified as 22-year-old Iliada Zois, the common-law spouse of the accused.
Police have not identified the slain 14-year-old boy, or the 16-year-old who escaped.
Investigators believe the killings took place on Christmas Day, and said the dispute was the result of a domestic argument.
Yaw is also charged with attempted murder and forcible confinement.
Toronto has recorded 84 homicides this year. The homicide record is 89, which was set in 1991.
