The mother of a three-year-old child found dead inside a Scarborough home has been charged in connection with the toddler's death.

Charlene Chambers, 32, is charged with second degree murder after the lifeless body of her daughter, Keayanna Chambers, was found inside her basement apartment.

Investigators were called to the residence located at 16 Ulysses Place near Midland and Finch Avenues at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday where they found the child's body.

An autopsy performed on Saturday revealed the toddler died from excessive pressure to the chest and neck.

Initial reports said the child's body was found badly burned, but investigators would only confirm there were obvious signs of trauma to body when attending officers arrived at the scene.

"These kinds of cases are very sensitive. They're a tragedy to all of us but in particular, they are a tragedy to the families involved," Det. Sgt. Chris Buck said during a press conference on Sunday.

"They've not only lost a young member of their family, but the young mother of that child to the judicial system."

Chambers made a brief appearance at a downtown court house on Saturday and will return to court on Tuesday morning.

According to neighbours, the unemployed mother was new to the area and was described as pleasant and friendly.

Buck said at a press conference on Sunday that Chambers had no previous history with police or the Toronto Children's Aid Society and has no known history of mental illness.
