TORONTO - Nearly 110 forest fires continue to burn in northwestern Ontario but the number of fire evacuees is dropping.
Officials say 327 residents of Cat Lake and Sandy Lake were cleared to return home on Thursday.
That leaves 3,051 residents of remote northern communities still displaced by fires that are burning over more than 540,000 hectares.
More than 2,000 firefighters, including 536 from out-of-province, were working to battle the fires.
They're being backed up by 11 heavy waterbombers, four light bombers, 90 helicopters and other support aircraft.
Provincial officials said seven aircraft were in use repatriating evacuees on Thursday.
