A special Toronto Transit Commission is scheduled for Tuesday where members are expected to debate the future of TTC general manager Gary Webster.
Councillor Joe Mihevic told CP24 Friday afternoon that five councillors have called for a meeting to force the termination of Webster.
"This is an absolutely shameful day here at city hall," Mihevic told CP24. "Gary Webster is one of the best managers that we have had at the TTC and that is acknowledged not just in the city of Toronto, but across Canada and internationally."
The move comes nine days after Toronto City Council voted in favour of a light rail transit plan and against Mayor Rob Ford's plan to focus on moving more transit underground.
At that meeting council voted 25 to 18 in favour of TTC chair Karen Stintz's light rail-based plan shunned by Rob Ford when he was elected mayor in 2010.
Ford had asked councillors during the meeting to step back and take time to make an informed decision on transit in Toronto, but councillors voted down that suggestion.
"Because (Webster) spoke truth to power last week around the light rail versus the subway plan, they have a vendetta. They are getting him," said Mihevic. "If you disagree with the mayor, you are out."
Reaction was also swift from the public on the potential ouster of Webster.
"It's a sad day for transit riders when five commissioners who are responsible for our transit system want to fire someone for doing their job," Jamie Kirkpatrick, a spokesperson for advocate group TTCriders, said in a press release.
"Every Torontonian who cares about the TTC should immediately call the mayor and ask him to put a stop to this."
Kirkpatrick noted that the five councillors who called for the meeting also voted against allowing TTC staff to provide information on options for transit expansion earlier this year.
