MILTON, Ont. - The premier is denying opposition claims he's reviewing a second natural gas-fired plant in Liberal territory to protect seats in the fall election.
Dalton McGuinty says it's appropriate for Ontario's environment minister to take a look at such power projects, and dismissed questions about the review's timing.
There's never a wrong time to do the right thing, says McGuinty, and that's what his government will do.
The 280-megawatt gas plant west of Toronto got the green light from the province in 2008 and received a municipal building permit in May.
But residents near the Mississauga site have been fighting the project, with two prominent Liberals from nearby Etobicoke ridings also voicing concerns.
The move came eight months after the government spiked a similar project in neighbouring Oakville.
Environment Minister John Wilkinson has said the latest review was needed to "protect human health," and had nothing to do with politics.
The opposition calls it political meddling by a party desperate to hang on to seats.
