Markham councillors will look over a proposal on Friday about a possible 20,000-seat sports facility in the town.
The proposed GTA Centre would be a sports and entertainment complex, built north of Highway 407 near the Unionville GO station.
Construction of the facility would not cost taxpayers any money, since the venue would be supported by private investors, according to sports investor Graeme Roustan, who is heading up the GTA Sports and Entertainment Consortium.
One resident argued the community is too small to support a facility to compete with the Air Canada Centre for concerts, and it would "absolutely" need an NHL team to be sustainable.
"I don't know how many concerts would come here, I think the ACC is a pretty good place for concerts," he said.
However, there is no word yet of bringing an NHL team to Markham.
The facility is being created to respond to the need for a larger, premier venue to host community events, concerts, and major sporting events in the GTA, according to a press release from the consortium.
The venue will cost investors and the local development community an estimated $325 million.
