A 27-year-old Toronto man is facing a second-degree murder charge after another man was found dead inside a Scarborough apartment early Christmas morning.

About 9 a.m. Thursday, police were called for unknown trouble at an apartment building in the Birchmount Road and Eglinton Avenue East area, where they found a man suffering from signs of trauma.

David Riley said he had been enjoying a few drinks with the victim and another man on Christmas Eve when an argument broke out.

The victim, identified by Toronto police as 49-year-old Kurt Gonsalves of Toronto, was severely beaten during the fight, according to Riley.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as trauma to the face.

On Friday, police arrested and charged Ryan Walters with second-degree murder.

Walters made his first appearance in court on Saturday morning.

The murder is Toronto's 70th homicide of the year.
