After a deadly weekend on GTA streets, Toronto police have apprehended the driver in a high-speed car chase.
The wild pursuit began at 7 a.m. and came to an end on Queen Street East near Ontario Street when the man's vehicle stalled.
Police estimate the man reached speeds on downtown roads in excess of 100 kilometres per hour.
Police claim the driver of the car was driving on the wrong side of the road on several one-way streets and narrowly missed colliding with a number of other vehicles and a street car.
"It came across the radio very briefly and then all of a sudden this fellow was on me, we managed to stop him before someone was killed," arresting officer Cst. Paul Stone told CTV News on Monday.
"These problems with excessive speeders and racers is unacceptable."
The officer was assisted in the arrest by a passing motorist, Masimo Trasini, who said the driver did not appear to be impaired.
"I actually saw him as he was heading in my direction on the road and he was alert, it's not like he dozed off or anything. He was coherent and knew what he was doing," Trasini told CTV News on Monday.
Forty-year-old Edward Thorpe, of no fixed address, was taken to 14 Division where he was charged with:
- dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- assault police
- having a concealed weapon
- failing to stop for police
- driving under a suspended license
Thorpe is also wanted by Hamilton police on outstanding arrest warrants.
