The victim, identified as 58-year-old Jin Lan Liu, of Markham, was struck by a late model silver Chevrolet Equinox while he crossed Steeles Avenue East at Midland Avenue at about 4:30 a.m.
Police said the motorist sped off, leaving Liu on the ground.
The driver was last seen driving north on Old Kennedy Road, west of where the crash took place, police said.
Investigators say the large vehicle sustained damage to the front end, particularly the grill and its plastic bug deflector.
