Toronto's library board approved a budget cut on Monday night that will eliminate 100 jobs, but voted to defer cutting branch hours until the end of the year.
The board was debating the $17 million in cuts proposed by the city's chief librarian to reach Mayor Rob Ford's demand of a 10 per cent budget reduction for all city departments.
Jane Pyper had recommended cutting the full-time jobs, as well as implementing a reduction of branch hours and ending Sunday service at eight branches.
By cutting 100 full-time jobs, the library board will save nearly $10 million.
The board decided to defer its decision on the cutting service hours and Sunday service until December.
Ford is asking for the 10 per cent budget cut to remedy a projected $774 million budget shortfall in 2012.
