TORONTO - Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory may soon find out who he's up against in an upcoming byelection that could be his ticket back into the Ontario legislature.

Rick Johnson, who ran unsuccessfully under the Liberal banner in the October 2007 election, will be making an announcement Monday about the byelection.

The school board chairman is expected to announce that he'll run against Tory once the byelection has been called in the central Ontario riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock.

Johnson is a former president of the Ontario Public School Boards Association and co-chair of a Ministry of Education committee to advise the government on how to bring more accountability to school boards.

Johnson lost to Conservative Laurie Scott in 2007, but pulled in nearly 30 per cent of the votes.

Scott, who has represented the riding for five years, agreed earlier this month to step aside so Tory could run in a byelection and return to the legislature.

The Liberal riding association has confirmed to a Lindsay, Ont., newspaper that it will field a local candidate in the byelection, but wouldn't provide a name.

Johnson was not immediately available for comment.
