TORONTO - Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is out four to six weeks after surgery to repair a "significant" cut on his left leg.
The 25-year-old defenceman was injured in the second period of Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Ottawa when he got tangled up awkwardly with Senators forward Peter Regin.
Phaneuf needed assistance to get to the team's dressing room and had surgery later that night, the team said in a release Wednesday.
The injury came shortly after Leafs GM Brian Burke met with reporters during the first intermission to express his disappointment at fans who booed Phaneuf during a 2-0 loss to the Rangers on Saturday.
Phaneuf has four assists and a minus-6 rating in 11 games this season.
The Maple Leafs recalled defenceman Korbinian Holzer from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.
In eight games with the Marlies, Holzer has no points and 17 penalty minutes.
