Pink slips will be handed out at City Hall as workers accept buyout packages, in a plan aimed at saving millions of dollars for next year's budget, Toronto's city manager said.
However, Joe Pennachetti told reporters on Thursday that the city was not able to approve as many buyout packages as it had hoped.
He said that he has accepted about 230 buyout packages, falling short of the 700 anticipated applications.
"At the end of the day, there is still significant savings," Pennachetti said. "So, that's a big piece of the puzzle in solving the problem."
The city's Voluntary Separation packages were offered to eligible workers in July.
Union members and non-union employees will be awarded three weeks' pay for every year they have worked with the city, to a maximum of six months, Managers would receive four weeks for every year of service.
The layoffs are part of Ford's plan to find $774 million in savings to balance the city's 2012 budget.
The city estimates it will save $20 million by giving the 230 workers buyouts.
The total number of layoffs will be finalized by the end of the month.
