WINDSOR, Ont. - The water levels of the Great Lakes are expected to drop below average this fall, which could hamper the shipping industry and mean higher prices for consumers.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicts Lake Superior will see the biggest decline, beating the record low set in 1925 -- and that will affect other Great Lakes.
Lakes Erie and Ontario are expected to see the slightest changes.
Windsor harbour master Bill Marshall says low water levels mean ships are forced to carry lighter loads, which in the end means higher prices for consumers.
Marshall also says lower water levels can hamper ships' ability to get into certain ports.
