Area OPP charged more than 100 drivers under street racing legislation over the long weekend during a wild few days on Toronto's highways.
Police arrested almost 40 drivers a day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday for driving more than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit. On an average day, police charge about 22 people with the offence.
The street racing law, Section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act, came into effect last fall. It allows police to impound a charged driver's vehicle for up to a week. Those charged lose their licences on the spot.
OPP Traffic Sgt. Cam Woolley said more than 3,500 drivers have been charged under the act since Sept. 30.
"We're serious about this and we're not going to give up," he told CTV Toronto.
Excessive speed has been a factor in many of the almost 33,000 accidents that occurred on provincial highways since November, Woolley said.
"You have to slow down. You have to drive safely. Whether it's bad weather or good weather, there are still some drivers that don't get it."
