The Ontario government announced plans Monday to turn the Kipling station on the Bloor-Danforth subway line into a "flagship transit hub" connected to GO buses, GO trains and Mississauga transit.
Kipling is the final station on the western end of the Bloor-Danforth line. It currently connects with GO Transit's Milton railway line.
The hub at Kipling is an expected improvement to the congested Islington subway station, most Mississauga commuters currently catch GO Transit.
Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield, Environment Minister Laurel Broten and GO Transit Chairman Peter Smith made the announcement Monday afternoon, at the Kipling station.
Planning and design are currently underway and construction on the $30-million project will start in 2008, with completion in 2010, they said.
Other features:
- Full accessibility for persons with disabilities
- LEED certified as a "green building"
- Built with renewable and low-emission construction materials and maximizing natural light
The funding will be shared by the province and GO Transit, with Mississauga is contributing $5.5 million to the project.
This comes after the recent announcement of MoveOntario 2020, "a multi-year $17.5 billion rapid transit action plan for the GTA and Hamilton. "
