A nine-year-old girl is lucky to be alive after falling 60 feet down a well near Cayuga, Ont. Monday afternoon.

The girl was playing with her sister in the backyard of a rural home just west of Cayuga, south of Hamilton. There was a concrete cover on the well but when the girl jumped on it, the cover crumbled.

Victoria Spidel fell down the well and spent nearly an hour partially submerged in ice-cold water, but she hung on to a pipe until she was rescued by firefighters.

A Haldimand County firefighter was lowered into the 36-inch wide shaft to save the girl.

She suffered a broken arm, hypothermia and some scrapes but doctors say she will make a full recovery.
