An 85-year-old Toronto man was struck and killed by a school bus while walking across a west-end street on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred just after 9 a.m. on Scarlett Road, north of St. Clair Avenue, at Bernice Crescent.

"He was crossing in relation to a pedestrian crossover, legally and lawfully within the roadway, when he was struck by a northbound vehicle," Sgt. Tim Burrows told reporters at the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The vehicle involved was a small school bus. The driver, a 49-year-old Toronto woman, was the only one inside at the time.

Police said she was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Officers are still investigating how the crash occurred. The area was closed to traffic for several hours.

There is no word yet if charges will be laid.

The man is the 12th pedestrian killed in a traffic accident on Toronto's streets this year, and the third in the last five days.

On Saturday morning, two women in their 20s were struck and killed while jaywalking across an east-end street.
