Toronto's Eglinton light rail transit line is the costliest infrastructure project in Canada, according to a report from an industry magazine.

ReNew Canada says the $8.2-billion price tag attached to the Eglinton LRT makes the line costlier than hydroelectric dam projects in British Columbia ($7.9 billion), Quebec ($6.5 billion) and Newfoundland ($6.2 billion).

The Eglinton LRT plan came about last year when Toronto Mayor Rob Ford killed the municipality's Transit City LRT project and swapped in his own plan.

The cancelled Transit City LRT project and its $4.6 billion price tag had been ranked the country's fourth most expensive construction project last year.

ReNew Canada said the 2012 Top 100 list had the highest-ever combined price tag of $114.2 billion -- $14.6 billion of which has been earmarked for various light-rail projects.

Another $5.9 billion is being spent on subway projects across the country, including Toronto's Spadina subway extension, ranked eighth on the list.

A construction project remains on the list until it is entirely completed, ReNew noted, meaning a project could remain listed for more than a decade.
