One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash in a Newmarket intersection on Monday afternoon.

York Regional Police said a Hyundai Santa Fe was travelling eastbound on Davis Drive when it struck a Honda Civic going north on Prospect Street at around 4:50 p.m..

The 26-year-old male driver of the Civic was brought to a Toronto trauma centre in serious condition, where he later died of injuries. His name has not been released, but police say he lived in Newmarket.

The 46-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville woman driving the SUV was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Because there are no traffic cameras at the intersection, police are looking for witnesses to come forward.

The investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit is still underway. Anyone with information is asked to call the CRU at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7704, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
