A Toronto condo corporation is installing mesh on three of its buildings to prevent glass from falling on city streets.
Concord Adex, which develops condominium buildings in downtown Toronto and North York, is installing the mesh around the glass panels on balconies at the Parade building at Fort York Boulevard and Spadina Avenue and at two other buildings in North York near Leslie Street and Sheppard Avenue.
Balcony glass shattered and fell from several condos owned by Daniels Corporation and Lanterra Developments in July and August last year. After the glass fell, several roads were closed, and one woman was injured after falling glass sliced her wrist.
After the incidents last year, city councillors put in a request to the province to make changes to the Ontario building code.
"We've had a number of other occurrences since the concentration last summer," said Toronto executive director and chief building official Ann Borooah.
Concord Adex vice-president of construction Arash Beheshti said the glass fell from buildings constructed by a different developer but his firm determined they use a common supplier for building materials.
"We are doing this because of what's happening elsewhere in the industry," he said.
"We're reviewing it because we want to make sure our residents, our investors, our communities, are safe."
