The children of slain grocery store clerk Hou Chang Mao smiled on Wednesday after being presented with cheques totalling $10,000 that will help them pay for their father's funeral.
Zuo Xi, 23, and his sister Yun Yan, 18, accepted the donation that was raised by members of the East Chinatown community.
Mao's wife, who lives in China, will not be able to attend the funeral on Friday because she can't afford the travel costs.
Despite the donations, Trinity-Spadina NDP MPP Olivia Chow says more help is needed for the grief-stricken family.
"There's work (that needs to be done) to make sure that Mr. Mao's family is taken care," Chow told reporters.
A trust fund has also been set up for Mao's son and daughter. Donations can be made at any Scotiabank branch to account number 41152-00320-18.
Coun. Paula Fletcher said she is concerned because the children are missing their "anchor."
"The children are wondering what is going to happen to them. They don't speak English," Fletcher said.
Mao, 47, was struck by a stray bullet last Thursday night while working outside Fu Yao Supermarket, at 643 Gerrard St. East, near Broadview Avenue. He was hit in the chest and died from his injury.
Police say he was an innocent bystander in a gun battle between at least two shooters.
On Monday, frustrated investigators asked for help from the community, saying they had not yet received a single tip from the public despite the fact more than 100 people were in the area at the time of the shooting.
No arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been released. Authorities, however, have released a picture of a light-coloured car they believe is connected to the shooting.
Officers will return to the scene of the crime on Thursday night and are hoping residents will come forward with information.
