BRAMPTON, Ont. - Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is looking for witnesses to a multi-vehicle collision in Brampton that resulted in the death of a 61-year-old man.

The police watchdog says the man died in hospital after being injured in the crash on Monday northwest of Toronto.

The SIU says a Peel Region police officer was parked in his cruiser at the Bramalea City Centre when he noticed a vehicle and made eye contact with the 55-year-old driver.

The officer lost track of the vehicle when it drove away, and a second officer began to follow the vehicle but also lost sight of it.

A short time later, the SIU says the vehicle was involved in a collision with several other vehicles, injuring the 61-year-old man who later died in Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital. Police had earlier reported the victim was 50.

The SIU is an arm's-length agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
