Durham police have charged a Whitby woman with second-degree murder in the region's first murder of the year.

Moira Reilly, 31, was arrested after officers discovered the lifeless body of a 50-year-old man in her home early Wednesday morning.

Police said the victim, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, suffered "obvious trauma," but they are not elaborating on the fatal injuries.

Reilly is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing via video link on Thursday.

Neighbours told the Toronto Star conflicting stories of the homeowner. Some described her as quiet, while others said they often heard noisy parties in the home.

Police are trying to determine what happened prior to and after the slaying. Anyone who met with Reilly on Tuesday night is asked to call either Det. Mitch Martin or Det. Cliff Carr of the Homicide Unit at 905-579-1520 ext. 5405 or 5407.
